Literacy Enrichment
In early September 2021, we conducted diagnostic testing for reading in order to measure how our students compared to their peers. The results were alarming: 50% of kids were coming into ninth grade performing at a fourth grade reading level. In fact, 80% of our kids were deemed “at risk” (2+ grade levels behind) in reading.
By October, we had hired seven full-time literacy enrichment teachers and installed a comprehensive tutoring program, spending $575,000 over budget. Beginning with daily, off-hour tutoring sessions and personalized development plans, we set up an intensive, regimented program. We were in constant contact with parents to ensure they were fully aware of the situation, their child’s specific needs, and the support offered to them in and outside of school hours.
By the end of the 2021-2022 school year, we reduced the number of “at risk” students in reading to 47% - a remarkable 33% improvement. We also increased the percent of students reading at or above grade level by 13%.
For the 2022-2023 school year, we will expand the program into math.
