Earl Monroe


Legacy Trustee

A transcendent superstar, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe dazzled fans and teammates alike with his on-court prowess. The innovative playmaker drew crowds at each stage of his career, whether fans witnessed him in Philadelphia high school gyms, at Winston Salem State, or with the Baltimore Bullets and New York Knicks. “Slick and always exciting,” the legendary Sports Illustrated writer Frank Deford said of Monroe. “The Pearl” led the Knicks to their last championship season in 1973 and is a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame and one of the Top 60 Players in NBA history.

Monroe’s legacy extends beyond the hardwood. He continues to preach the importance of education and has been involved in various community affairs programs, including the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health, the Crown Heights Youth Collective and the Literary Assistance Fund. Additionally, for his extensive humanitarian work, he has received many honors, including the Harlem Professionals Inspiration Award, Most Outstanding Model for American Youth, and the Big Apple Sportsman of the Year. In 2008, Earl Monroe was awarded a Peabody for producing the four-hour documentary, Black Magic

Dan Klores is a Brooklyn-born, award-winning filmmaker and playwright, and founder of a public relations/integrated marketing and crisis communications firm, Dan Klores Communications (DKC). DKC evolved into the fastest growing independent firm in the nation with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Miami.  

Klores’ celebrated documentaries and films—four of which debuted at Sundance Film Festival—include The Boys of Second Street Park, Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story, Viva Baseball, and Basketball: A Love Story. He received the 2008 Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary for Crazy Love and a Peabody Award for his film Black Magic. In addition to his cinematic work, Klores authored Basketball: A Love Story with Jackie MacMullan and Roundball Culture: South Carolina Basketball. His numerous columns, articles, and essays have been featured in the New York Times, Esquire, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, Huffington Post, The Undefeated, The Ringer, New York Post, New York Daily News, Southern Exposure, and Grantland.

Legacy Trustee (In Memoriam) 

David Stern served as commissioner of the National Basketball Association from 1984 to 2014. Prior to his tenure as the longest-serving Commissioner in the history of North American sports, Stern first joined the NBA as a general counsel in 1978. In his 30 years of leadership, Stern brought the league and the game itself to unprecedented levels of financial success and global exposure. Choosing to market the sport around the star power of the league’s talented players, Stern oversaw the NBA’s rise to the forefront of American popular culture during the 80’s and 90’s, while also expanding its popularity internationally. Today, the league holds offices in 12 cities outside the U.S. and broadcasts to over 200 territories in 40 languages. Alongside the growth of the NBA, Stern also helped found the WNBA and NBA G League.

Stern was born in New York City, where he also attended Columbia University Law School after graduating from Rutgers University. He is a member of both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the FIBA Hall of Fame. He has been recognized across America’s most esteemed institutions, such as Harvard and Yale Universities as well as the NAACP, for his contributions to African-American culture as well as his superb executive leadership. Following his retirement as Commissioner, Stern served as an advisor to various investment banks, venture capital firms and consultancies, in addition to directly investing in technology and sports startups. Stern died in January 2020, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dianne, and his two sons Eric and Andrew.

Executive Director

Brandon Corley comes to Earl Monroe as the Co-Founder and former Academic Director for South Bronx Community Charter High School. He was born and raised in Chicago and represents the Englewood community of Chicago’s Southside with great pride. Brandon was a high school mathematics teacher for many years before becoming a school leader, working in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York City. Brandon has worked with the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools® program since 2004 in various capacities. His role as co-founder and Project Director of sites in Chicago, Milwaukee, New Orleans, and Mt Vernon, NY, his time as a national trainer, and his work planning regular youth mobilizations, conferences and events has earned him recognition amongst his peers. He is a graduate of Chicago State University with a BS in Mathematics/Secondary Education and earned a MS in Educational Leadership from Baruch College. Brandon is married to his best friend, Aja, and they have two children together.

Val Ackerman

Val Ackerman, recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, is the fifth Commissioner of the BIG EAST Conference. She spent eight years as an attorney and executive at the National Basketball Association, was the founding President of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and is a past President of USA Basketball, which oversees the U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic basketball program. She also served for two terms as the U.S. representative to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Val is a 1981 graduate of the University of Virginia, where she graduated with high honors with a B.A. in political and social thought and was a three-time captain and Academic All-American on the women’s basketball team. She received her law degree from UCLA in 1985.

Marv Albert

Marv Albert is the long-time voice of the NBA. An inductee to multiple Halls of Fame, Albert has been providing NBA play-by-play since 1967. Marv has called 24 NBA All-Star Games, 13 NBA Finals (eight on TV / five on national radio), eight Super Bowls (national radio), eight Stanley Cup Finals and five Olympic games, including the 1992 Dream Team in Barcelona.

Marv was named “New York State Sportscaster of the Year” 20 times. He has won three New York Emmy® Awards in the “Outstanding On-Camera” category. He has been honored with six CableACE Awards as “Outstanding Play-By-Play Announcer.”

Dr. Mark Alter

Alter is a Professor of Educational Psychology at New York University and was the founding chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning and served as Chair for 14 years. He has an extensive record of publications, national and international workshops and funded grants in the field of special education. He was granted a Fulbright Senior Specialist award to Vietnam and was awarded The NYU Distinguished Teaching award. Alter has experience as an assistant teacher and teacher with students with severe and profound disabilities, as well as a PhD from Yeshiva University in special education. He has lectured and taught around the world, most recently in Romania, Crete, Brazil and Argentina discussing special education, teacher education and early childhood education.

Nate Archibald

Born and bred in the Bronx, Nate Archibald starred at Dewitt Clinton High School and then Texas Western University, en route to a 15-year Hall-of-Fame NBA career. Following his playing days, Nate returned to the Bronx, attaining a Masters from Fordham University in adult education and human resources. He has taught health and physical education in New York City’s public schools, and started an organized youth basketball league for boys. He is a strong advocate for the NBA Players Association and has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to youth basketball and education in Harlem and the Bronx. He is the only player in NBA history to lead the league in points scored and assists in the same season.

David Bar Katz

David Bar Katz’s prolific writing career spans film, theater, television. Among his accomplishments is the multiple Tony Award nominated show Freak which he co-wrote and directed on Broadway. Other theater work includes The History of Invulnerability, Philip Roth in Khartoum, (The Public Theater) and The Atmosphere of Memory (LAByrinth Theater Company, starring Ellen Burstyn)

Katz is the founder and Executive Director of The American Playwriting Foundation and The Relentless Award, given in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Katz has worked as a screenwriter at every studio in Hollywood. His script THE MAN IN THE ROCKEFELLER SUIT, written for Fox Searchlight made Hollywood’s ‘Black List’ of best unproduced screenplays. His latest film project is a collaboration with Vince D’Onofrio utilizing the music of Johnny Cash.

In television, Katz was the co-creator and a head writer for the Emmy-nominated FOX TV series HOUSE OF BUGGIN’, the first all-Latino comedy show in network history. Katz has developed shows at HBO, Showtime, FX, Sundance Channel, and Disney and was a Co-Executive Producer on Ray Donovan and is a Co-Executive Producer on Showtime’s upcoming series American Gigolo starring Jon Bernthal.

Katz is a graduate of Williams College where he was a varsity oarsman and a member of the only undefeated heavyweight boat in Williams College history. He lives in Manhattan with his four sons not far from the site of his great-grandfather’s Yiddish theater.

Bill Bradley

Bill Bradley is a former U.S. Senator from New Jersey and was a serial winner throughout his storied basketball playing career. Born and raised in Crystal City Missouri, Bill attended Princeton University after being named Mr. Basketball nationally. He starred at Princeton, twice winning NCAA National Player of the Year honors, in addition to winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Japan. Bill graduated magna cum laude and postponed a career in the NBA in order to attend Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics. During this time, he also played for Olimpia Milano in the Italian professional basketball, winning the European Champions Cup. He then went on to star for the New York Knicks winning two championships over the course of a 10–season Hall-of-Fame career.

Following his retirement from the NBA he won election to United States Senate. He served as Senator for 18 years playing a key role in shaping the country’s tax code and fighting for government protections for the nation’s youth and children’s health. In 2000, Bill ran for President in the Democratic primary opposite Vice President Al Gore. Since retiring from politics, Bill has worked as a consultant and investment banker with Allen and Compnay. He also serves on the board of several non-profits, such as the DonorsChoose Organization, the Acumen Fund, and Issue One, He is the author of six books, and father to one daughter, Theresa Anne.

Bobbito Garcia

NYC native Bobbito García is a freelance creative who has put an indelible footprint on multiple urban movements.

During the 1990s, the legendary air personality was one-half of the “Stretch and Bobbito” program on WKCR, which earned Source Magazine’s distinction of “The Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time”.

As the progenitor of sneaker journalism, García penned his landmark Source article “Confessions of a Sneaker Addict” in 1990, then in 2003 became the critically acclaimed author of Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987 (Testify Books). In 2005, ESPN’s “It’s The Shoes” series, hosted by Bobbito, became the first show on the subject in broadcasting history, after which, he later went on to direct “SneakerCenter” for ESPN+.

In 2007, Nike released seven co-designed Air Force 1 sneakers in collaboration with Garcia. He is also a world-renowned DJ, who has spun World, Soul and Jazz music at Lincoln Center, Central Park SummerStage, and the Smithsonian (DC).

As an award-winning filmmaker, García has directed Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC (PBS, NETFLIX), Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives (SHOWTIME, NETFLIX), and NY Times “Critics’ Pick” Rock Rubber 45s (Smithsonian African American Film Festival 2018 official selection).

A distinguished alum of Wesleyan University and founding member of the Kennedy Center’s Hip Hop Culture Council, "Kool Bob Love” currently produces his b-ball tournament Full Court 21™ in four continents, and co-produces music for the Stretch and Bobbito + The M19s Band.

Russ Granik

Russ Granik, former Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the National Basketball Association, has been Vice Chairman of Galatioto Sports Partners since October 2006. He was a guiding force in helping to establish the National Basketball Association as the most popular sports league in the world. Mr. Granik also represented the league in a wide range of successful projects, including collective bargaining agreements, television contracts, and the formation of the Dream Team, which launched NBA players onto the international stage starting with the 1992 Olympics. In September 2013, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Mr. Granik played a major role in the NBA's international expansion serving as Vice President and then President of USA Basketball from 1989 to 2000 when he was instrumental in working out the details of the participation of NBA players in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics. In November 2005, Mr. Granik received USA Basketball's Edward S. Steitz Award, which recognizes an individual for his outstanding contributions to international basketball.

Mr. Granik also served two terms as Chairman of the Board of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, where he has been a Trustee since 1984.

Mr. Granik graduated magna cum laude in 1969 from Dartmouth College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1973

Reggie Love

Reggie Love is a Senior Advisor at Apollo Global Management and is a Vice President and Head of External Affairs for HRS Management, the family office of Apollo co-founder and prominent sports franchise owner Joshua Harris.

Reggie previously served as Partner at RON Transatlantic EG from 2012-2019, an international financial holding company.

Prior to joining Transatlantic, Reggie served at the White House as personal aide to President Barack Obama from 2009-2011, where he was responsible for assisting with the coordination and completion of the President’s daily schedule as well as coordinating with other White House offices to set up long and medium range planning. Love moved to the District of Columbia in 2006 to work for then Senator Obama after short stints in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.

Love is a graduate of Duke University, holds and MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of the New York Times Best Seller, Power Forward, My Presidential Education, which is a collection of stories and principles learned during his time working for President Obama and being a captain for the all-time most winning NCAA coach, Mike Krzyzewski.

William Mulrow

Bill Mulrow is currently a Senior Advisor at Blackstone. Before rejoining Blackstone in 2017, he served as Secretary to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the highest appointive office in New York State government and the Governor's chief aide. Mr. Mulrow's career spans more than three decades in finance, business, government and academia. Mr. Mulrow's past financial experience includes senior positions held at Paladin Capital Group, Citi, Rothschild, and Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette Securities Corporation. He serves on the Board of Directors of Con Edison, JBG Smith, Titan Mining Corporation, and on the Trust and Investment Committee of M&T Bank. In addition to his career in finance and business, Mr. Mulrow has served in numerous government positions including as Chairman of the New York State Housing Finance Agency, Chairman of the State of New York Mortgage Agency, Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, Director of the Municipal Assistance Corporation for the City of New York, Director of the United Nations Development Corporation, and Chairman of the New York City Rent Guidelines Board. Mr. Mulrow has served in a number of academic posts including at the Harvard Kennedy School, the Board of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and Chairman of the Board of the Fordham Preparatory School. He has also been awarded several civic and community awards including the Humanitarian Award of the North American Boards of Rabbis and the Roy Wilkins Humanitarian Award of the New York State NAACP. Mr. Mulrow is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School and of Yale College where he graduated Cum Laude and was a Rhodes Scholar finalist.

Michele Roberts

Notably, Michele Roberts is the first woman to head a major professional sports union in North America. In her role as Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association, Ms. Roberts serves as the primary advocate for all players, ensuring the protection of the organization and its membership, including serving as the lead negotiator in all collective bargaining activities. Prior to this selection, Ms. Roberts was a renowned trial lawyer and member of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom’s Litigation Group. Ms. Roberts has tried more than 100 cases to jury verdicts, representing clients in a wide variety of areas, including products liability, white collar, racketeering, securities regulation violations, Title VII issues and premises liability. She has been called the “finest pure trial lawyer in Washington, D.C.” by Washingtonian Magazine. Ms. Roberts is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Ms. Roberts also served for eight years in the office of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where she was named Chief of the Trial Division. She served as counsel in more than 40 jury trials.

Ms. Roberts is a frequent lecturer and presenter to both the bench and bar on a variety of topics related to litigation and trial practice. She served as an adjunct member of the faculty at Harvard Law School, teaching a Trial Advocacy Workshop and was an instructor with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

On behalf of business, civic and trade organizations, Bill is one of the real estate industry’s strongest and most influential voices advancing pro-business public policy. Bill works tirelessly in Washington, DC, Albany and City Hall on behalf of groups including the Real Estate Roundtable, the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), the Association for a Better New York (ABNY), and the Partnership for New York City.

Bill is the current Chairman of the Real Estate Board of New York(REBNY) and is a Board Member of the Partnership for New York City, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York University, the Alliance for Downtown New York, the Economic Club of New York and the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation. Following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Bill was appointed President of NY State Governor Cuomo’s Empire State Relief Fund; and was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Pataki-McCall New York State Tax Relief Commission. He is a member of The Council on Foreign Relations and The New York City Marathon Committee.

Bill and his wife, Ophelia, reside in New York City. He is the proud parent of two grown children, Samantha and Michael, and is a grandfather of three.

Yul Vázquez

A recent inductee into the prestigious Academy of Arts and Sciences, and known for his distinguished performances across film, television, and stage, Yul Vázquez has never shied away from playing enigmatic characters.

Vázquez was recently seen as ‘Detective Yunis Sablo’ in HBO’s drama series THE OUTSIDER, and in Hulu’s feature film, BOOKS OF BLOOD. Prior to this, Vázquez was seen on Netflix’s Emmy-nominated series, RUSSIAN DOLL, and on TNT’s miniseries I AM THE NIGHT, directed by Patty Jenkins.

In recent years, Vázquez was seen in a number of feature films including Stephen Belber’s O.G.; Richard Linklater’s LAST FLAG FLYING; and in Amazon’s GRINGO, directed by Nash Edgerton.

Seamlessly moving between film, television, and stage, Yul received a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for the Steven Soderbergh directed film, TRAFFIC, as well as a Tony Award nomination, a Theatre World Award nomination, a Drama Desk, and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for his portrayal of 'Cousin Julio' in the Broadway production of THE MOTHERF**CKER WITH THE HAT.

Over the years, Vázquez has had memorable roles on some of television’s most popular shows, from his recurring character ‘Bob’ (the “angry gay Puerto Rican”) on SEINFELD to 'Rueben the Cuban' on HBO’s THE SOPRANOS.

In addition to be being a celebrated actor, Vázquez is also an established artist and photographer. His bold and colorful works are deeply personal, artistic reflections of identity, cultural specifics, and mortality. Vázquez’s art has been shown in New York and Miami.

Howard Wolfson

Senior Advisor to Mike Bloomberg (2014-present); Education Lead at Bloomberg Philanthropies (2014 – present); New York City Deputy Mayor for Government Affairs and Communications (2010-2013); Communications Director of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign; Prominent Political Strategist.

Mr. Wolfson directs Bloomberg Philanthropies’ education program, which focuses on strengthening educational leadership and advancing education reform policies in communities across the United States.

Additionally, as Bloomberg’s senior political advisor, Wolfson runs the former New York City Mayor’s Independence USA SuperPAC and advises him on politics and communication. Through the PAC, Wolfson led a successful $110M effort to help flip control of the U.S. House of Representatives for Democrats in the 2018 midterms – electing 21 of the 24 candidates supported by Independence USA.

From 2010-2013, Wolfson was the New York City Deputy Mayor for Government Affairs and Communications, overseeing local, state and federal government relations, in addition to helping craft the Bloomberg Administration's overall communications strategy.

Known as the “architect of Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate victory,” Wolfson was the communications director for her history-making run for the presidency in 2008. He has worked in and out of government, serving as Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Nita Lowey, as the Executive Director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Wolfson has worked on campaigns at every level of government, advising Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Andrew Cuomo, among others.

Wolfson, a New York native, graduated from the University of Chicago and received a Master’s in history from Duke University. He serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics and the American Theatre Wing.

Keith L.T. Wright

Keith L.T. Wright is the Director of Strategic Planning at Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP and focuses on assisting clients in their long-range strategic planning goals. Mr. Wight joined DHC after serving 23 years in the New York State Assembly, having chaired such committees as Housing Election Law, Social Services, and Labor. Hakiem Yahmadi

Hakiem Yahmadi, a Black American father of six, is a family man who loves his wife, children, grandchildren, and his great grandson. He also enjoys fishing, outdoor sports, old school music and is known as the Fisher of Men. A graduate of Metropolitan College with a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management & Business Continuity.

Presently, he is on Community Board 1. He is also the President of the Community Education Council 7. Proudly, an advocate in the South Bronx fighting against gun violence, mental health issues, trauma.
